One of the biggest mysteries for nonprofit founders is about the Board of Directors. How do you find the right people? Is it ok to start with friends and family? How many do I need and when? What do I even do with them?
First, we need to clarify the purpose of the board of directors.
Formally speaking, the Board of Directors has three legal responsibilities and 10 traditional roles/duties. These things are essential but there is an even bigger picture why your Board of Directors is critical to your success.
Your Board is your organization’s foundation. A home built on a weak foundation will never be sturdy, no matter how well built or beautiful everything else is. One small shift, one big storm and catastrophe can happen. The same is true for a nonprofit.
The truth is, many charities never get off the ground because the founder doesn’t get the right leadership on their board.
My experience suggests that this is frequently because less experienced founders are apprehensive about reaching out to the best potential board members.
This is where you must be honest with yourself. Starting a charity can be difficult and full of uncertainties. Are you personally able to address your fears or step out of your comfort zone to be successful?
Reducing your anxiety and getting high quality board members comes down to how well you understand the art of managing a charity and learning how to find the right people.
The skills for changing lives through a structured nonprofit are NOT common knowledge. Most people must intentionally learn about fiscal management, evaluation, Board development, grant writing, fundraising, and everything else. Don’t shortchange yourself or the lives you want to impact. Start with building a high-quality Board of directors.
I coach and train people to make a difference through starting successful charities. Do you feel like you can’t afford to work with a coach? I have started new charities and I remember starting up and having NO money. That’s why I built a fundraising and payment plan right into the training and coaching program. You get to learn, earn, and pay as you go.
Before you decide the board isn’t THAT important or that you can’t afford coaching, DM me or schedule a call. Let’s talk about your mission and what you need to succeed.
